Prof Shanaya Rathod

Professor Shanaya Rathod is a Private Consultant Psychiatrist who also works with Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. She is a visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Portsmouth and the former Director of Research for Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Through leadership and research projects she has influenced national strategy and held a number of leadership roles within the NHS in medical and clinical management.

She has been a Fellow of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2010 – 2013) and has held the position of Mental Health Clinical Lead for the Wessex Academic Health Sciences Network. She has also been the Mental Health Clinical Lead for Wessex Clinical Research Network. Through these roles, she has provided systems leadership across organizations on the strategic development of mental health services. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has authored books including: Back to Life, Back to Normality; Cultural Adaptation of CBT for Serious Mental illness; Brief Interventions in Psychosis; etc) especially on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and TIMBER therapy. She is also an invited speaker at national and international events.


Qualifications

Professor Shanaya Rathod specialized as a Psychiatrist in Wessex, gaining full membership of the Royal College Of Psychiatrists and accreditation with the GMC as a consultant specialist in adult and old age psychiatry. She then completed a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Southampton and a Masters in Leadership from the University of Birmingham and NHS Leadership Academy. Professor Rathod is also a certified Coach and Mentor (Charted Management Institute Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring).

Expertise

Over the years Professor Rathod has mastered specialist skills across the illness pathway through assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common and severe enduring mental health conditions. She has an expertise in supporting people through stressful times in their lives, through developing their resilience and coping strategies by working with them collaboratively and coaching them towards recovery. She aims to provide a high quality personalised and friendly service where patient’s experience, choice, and needs come first. Professor Rathod also understands the needs of carers and does her best to provide family friendly services.


Medico-legal Work

Professor Rathod is approved under section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) as having had special experience in the assessment and management of psychiatric disorders and has experience in preparing medicolegal reports based on patient interviews, examination and review of notes since 2005. She has been instructed by solicitors and insurance companies to prepare reports on a variety of cases including fitness to plead and stand trial, insanity defence, custody matters, employment issues, personal injury claims, other insurance claims, negligence and critical injury claims etc. She has been instructed by claimants, defendants and jointly, and is experienced in giving evidence in Court.
